On Saturday 14th June The Lensbury was proud to launch its new Access 303 sailing dinghy designed for people with disabilities. We named the boat Rosie and launched her at 12.30pm.
All members were invited and 40 people attended the launch including Alex Hovden, future GB para Olympic sailor and GB Silver Passport holder, and Nicola Groves, GB sailor and GB Gold passport holder. This particular boat has a weighted keel to stop it from capsizing and you can sit two people in a hammock side by side facing forwards in the boat. It is controlled by a joystick which moves the rudder. I had a sail in her and it was so relaxing and not like any sailing I have ever done before, it will be very appealing for older sailors too.
Alex spent the day talking to juniors and adults about his sailing and explaining how he got involved in the sport. Nicola also talked to people and then took some of the juniors for a sail in one of our Laser Bahia sailing dinghies.
