Health and Safety

Please read our fire safety regulations arrow-down

Fire alarm test
We carry out testing of the fire alarm system every Monday morning at 10.30am. Please take no action at this time unless the alarm bell rings continuously for more than 20 seconds.

On arrival

As soon as possible after check-in, please ensure you:
• Check the layout of the ground floor and identify escape routes
• Read the fire safety emergency instructions displayed on the wall or door in your bedroom
• Walk the fire exit route and count the number of doors from your room to the exit. This can aid your escape should lighting be inadequate due to corridor becoming filled with smoke
• Note the location of the fire alarm call points in the vicinity of your room
• Familiarise yourself with the layout of your bedroom and your best escape routes in case of a fire emergency
• Place your valuable items next to the bed at night. They are then nearby if you have to evacuate your bedroom
• Do not ignore a firm alarm (excluding the fire alarm test outlined at the start of this section)

What to do if a fire breaks out
If you suspect that there is a fire, please take the following actions immediately – delay can be dangerous:
• Report the fire immediately by breaking a fire alarm call point. Internal emergency number is 2222 and can be dialled on any on-site telephone
• Close the door of the room where the fire is, this will help contain the fire and restrict the spread of poisonous fumes
• Use the nearest exit to vacate the hotel – do not use the lifts
• Before opening closed doors, check them for heat which may indicate a fire behind the door
• If your escape route is filled with smoke, keep low where the quality of air and visibility is improved. Keep close to the wall to avoid disorientation
• On leaving the hotel or Ascot building, report to your evacuation point
• If you have a disability or you require assistance in the event of an evacuation, please inform Hotel Reception who will register you on our PEEP system

Information for guests with special needs
Please advise us if you have any special requirements due to hearing or visual difficulties, mobility impairment or any other special need so that we can make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable. If you require assistance, please contact Hotel Reception (open 24 hours daily) for assistance on 100. The main lift adjacent to Hotel Reception is DDA compliant.

Hard of hearing
Guide dogs for the blind and deaf are welcome at The Lensbury and we are more than happy to provide water bowls if required. Hearing loops are available at all main reception areas and in the bar. We also have Vibrating Pillows available on request from Hotel Reception.

Open/Deep Water arrow-down

Our History

100 Years of British Heritage arrow-down

We celebrated 100 fabulous years of The Lensbury in 2020! Take a look back and discover the fascinating history behind our famous resort.

The formation of our iconic club (1920 – 1939)
The Lensbury Club was first formed in 1920 as the sports and social club for employees of the Dutch petroleum giant Shell. The main buildings that occupied the site from 1920 were demolished and the Clubhouse was completed in 1938 which still stands as the heart of the club to this day, benefitting from the prestigious riverside location at Teddington lock.
Club activities ceased during the Second World War and The Lensbury was turned into Shell’s London Head Office, which included air raid shelters! Fortunately, the main clubhouse was unaffected by a bomb that was dropped on the film studios located next door.

1940 – 1959
Post-war, The Lensbury reconnected with its sporting roots and the club really began to cement itself as a sporting institution. Shell graduates would live at The Lensbury for their first 2 years of employment and sporting excellence was a pre-requisite! As the sporting reputation grew, many sporting legends and teams began to use The Lensbury’s first class facilities. To this day, tennis stars and international rugby teams still utilise the elite facilities on offer.

1960 – 1979
In 1974, Shell decided to centralise all of its training at The Lensbury and the purpose-built conference centre was created for this, whilst also allowing state-of-the art facilities and hotel to be used by external companies and individuals for the first time. To this day the Conference Centre provides modern facilities for meetings and events for up to 200 people, in the unique riverside location.

1980 – 1999
In the 1990’s Shell reviewed its employee benefits and along with many other multi-national companies decided to reconfigure how it operated its subsidised employee benefit. They opened the club up to local members and other individuals and businesses for the first time and The Lensbury Club as we know it today was born. Many of the local members who joined during this period are still loyal members to this day and it goes a long way to show how important the club has become to so many.
At this time, the 15 acres of playing fields on the opposite side of Broom Road were sold to St Mary’s University College, securing the use of the land for sports long into the future and protecting the important heritage formed by The Lensbury.

2000 – 2020
The early 2000’s saw a significant investment programme into the facilities, bedrooms and grounds. This included the creation of a unique 3-course golf court on the grounds which has since been redeveloped into elite level sports pitches.
In 2019, The Lensbury was acquired by London & Regional Hotels and an exciting new era for The Lensbury began. A £1 million investment in the gym and studio facilities was completed in December 2019 and is the first major project under the new ownership.
2020 and beyond

Under the ownership of London & Regional Hotels and continued investment, the future of The Lensbury has been secured for generations to come. With ambitions to be the best members’ club in South West London, The Lensbury stays true to its roots as a family club and our rich sport and social traditions that were formed way back in 1920, but with a renewed vision for a thoroughly modern club and facilities, offering an exceptional experience for members and guests alike. Here is to the next chapter of The Lensbury!
